David Paul Miller II
1946-2016
Resident of Marblehead
David, retired publisher, passed away on November 30, 2016. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Hughes Miller, and their children, David Benjamin Miller, Brian Michael Miller, and Lauren McKenzie Miller, as well as his brother Martin K. Miller. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cassie Lynn.
David was born in San Jose on October 1, 1946, to David Paul Miller, a fire Captain, and Olivia Cobrunson. His grandparents and great grandparents were early Santa Clara County settlers, and he was a descendant of Mayflower passengers and Revolutionary War heroes through his paternal grandmother, Myrtle Van Alstyne Miller.
In the 1960s, David marched for civil rights, and attended Santa Clara University, where he majored in history. After college, he taught for several years in the public schools of impoverished Richmond, California. Later he became a publisher of medical and scientific textbooks, working for companies such as Mosby, Quality Medical Publishing, Blackwell Scientific, HC Pro, and Opus Communications, where he served as Vice President. David's career took him across the USA, and throughout Europe and South America. Aside from his work David loved to travel, had a passion for genealogy and family history, and was an avid reader; he especially enjoyed reading American history, nautical fiction, and the works of Shakespeare. He was also an appreciator of fine wine, gourmet cooking, and all things culinary. He greatly enjoyed walking the village streets, parks, and shores of his historic Marblehead. But as anyone who knew him well knows, it was spending time with family and friends that David loved most of all. He was a generous and kind individual who enthusiastically opened his home and table to others, and will be well remembered by many for his warm hospitality and jovial sense of humor.
David was a truly great, noble-hearted man--the best father and husband anyone could ask for. He literally lived for his family, loved with a full heart, and taught all of his children to lead an idealistic and principled life. Although David was not religious, he often expressed his belief in a "Force for Good" and a higher power. His love for family and friends knew no bounds, and he will be sorely missed by the countless people whose lives he touched.
Per David's original wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a memorial donation in David's honor to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Arrangements were held by Murphy Funeral Home 85 Federal St. Salem, MA 01970. For additional information or online guestbook please visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com or call 978-744-0497.
