David E. Fernald, age 67, loving husband for 39 years of Elaine (Dube) of Salem, died in the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, following a brief illness.

Born in Glenshaw, PA the son of the late Herbert B. and Jean (Cramer) Fernald, he attended local schools and was graduated from the Shaler Township High schools. He then joined the United States Navy, proudly serving the Country until being honorably discharged in 1969In 1991 he became employed by the National Park Service at the Salem Maritime Site until his retirement in 2012.

For many he was active in Salem Youth Soccer as well as Salem High School during his children high school years. He was an avid outdoorsman who was passionate about saltwater fishing, camping and boating. He was also well known for his awesome vegetable gardens.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Brent and his wife Julie Fernald of Lowell, MA and Brandon and his wife Kelly Fernald of Danvers, MA;a brother Stephen and his wife Madaline Fernald of Lake Tahoe, CA; a sister, Nancy and her husband Curt Freed of Denver, CO; a sister in law Carol King of Salem; two nieces Alison Fernald of San Francisco, CA, Hannah King of Salem ; a nephew Samuel Fernald of San Diego, CA and a grandson, Logan Fernald.

His funeral will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 10:00 AM in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
