Marblehead….
Christopher James Alex, age 58, of Marblehead, MA passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, May 25th at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was the best friend and loving husband of Christine Lenahan and the devoted father of Gillian and Geoffrey Alex. Chris and Chris were together for forty years, having met at seventeen when their typing teacher at Huntington High School put ehir seats together as he thought they would make a good couple.
He was predeceased by his father James Alex, D.D.S of Huntington, New York. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Kathryn Alex, his brother Gary Alex, D.D.S and his wife Peggy, his sister Ms. Cathy Alex all of Huntington, New York and by his sister Ms Betty Elex Cantor of Stowe, Vermont. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Chris was born in Bosoton, but raised in Huntington, New York. He was an accomplished athlete excelling in soccer, lacrosse, Sailing and golf. He proudly reminded his children that he still held the standing broad jump record at the Huntington Flower Hill Elementary School.
As an accomplished sailor he won the Long Island Sound Junior Midget Championship at age fourteen. He later sailed Star boats qualifying for the 1972 Olympics by was unable to participate as he deemed professional for teaching sailing lessons during the summer. Chris was the US Laser National Champion and US Star National Champion later sailing in the Star Worlds in 1971/Puegot Sound, 1972/Caracas, Venezuela and 1973/ San Diego. He was an accomplished big boat racer sailing for numerous years on the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit and the International Offshore Racing Circuit. His most enjoyable days were spent aboard Stampede competing in the Newport Bermuda race. Block Island Race Week, Stanford Vineyard Race. The Marblehead Halifax, the Fugawi and various other Long Island and New England offshore races. His avocation turned his vocation as he was a sail maker for Hard Sails in Long Island and then for Hood Sailmakers in Marblehead where he became the National Sales Manager. Following Hood's move to Rhode Island Chris became a yhacht broker having his own brokerage firm and then joining Northrop and Johnson in Beverly, MA.
Chris was also a great lacrosse player. He played crease attack at Huntington High School winning the Suffolk County Championships in 1967 and 1968. He played lacrosse at Penn State University receiving the first ever lacrosse scholarship awarded at Penn State. He graduated from Penn State with a degree in Ancient Roman History. His true passion however was golf, always keeping his clubs in the car on the off chance that he could squeeze in a round or go to the driving range . He was very proud of his 5.9 handicap. He instilled his love of lacrosse in his daughter, Gillian and golf to his son Geoff.
Chris later switched careers attending Boston University and obtaining a degree as a software engineer. He completed this program in one year with distinction.
He spent the last seven years at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems in Tewksbury, MA as a software engineer. Of all his careers, he truly enjoyed working at Raytheon and with his colleagues in the SBT division.
Chris will be missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Chris' life will be held on Friday, May 30th at 12 Noon in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 81 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North ST) Salem.
