Retired United States Navy Chief Petty Officer, Leonard T. McGrane, Sr, age 91, husband of the late Edith "Pat" (Pynn) McGrane, of Salem died at home early Tuesday morning.

Born in Salem the son of the late John P and Mary (Maguire) McGrane, he was educated in Salem schools graduated from Salem High School and then became employed by the railroad. At the outbreak of WW II Mr. McGrane enlisted to the United States Navy to begin what would become a 32 year career, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer E9.

Following his discharge, Mr. McGrane became a bridge tender for the Commonwealth of MA rising through the ranks to become Chief Lock and Drawer Operator. He also attended North Shore Community College for Meteorology. He was a member of several social groups including the VFW, DAV, Navy Chief's Club, the American Legion and was a founding member of the Ward Two Social Club. In his later years he enjoyed spending time with his many friends at McDonalds and Ziggy's Donuts as well as playing the piano, organ and concertina.

He is survived by two daughters Barbara A. Faircloth and her life partner Laurence Tessier of Salem, Rosemary A. Leszcynski and her husband Paul Leszczynski of Salem; his son Leonard T. McGrane, Jr. and his wife Jane McGrane of Raymond, NH. He is also survived by eight grandchildren William Faircloth, III, Lisa M. (Faircloth) Middleton and her husband John, Paul Leszczynski and his wife Elizabeth, Todd L. Leszczynski and his wife Robyn, Heather R. McGrane, Jeremy McGrane, Lindsay (McGrane) Rives and her husband Chris and Jason McGrane. Seventeen great grandchildren ,Jessica, Shane, Travis, and Devyn Faircloth; Ava Middleton, Alyssa Hunter, Sydney, Paige and Grace Leszczynski; Dylan and Rianna Greenwood; Mykenzie, Emma and James Rives, Hannah and Evan McGrane; one great great grandchild Aaliyah Faircloth; a sister Jean O'Donnell, three brothers Richard and his wife Cecile, William and his wife Mary, Everett McGrane, and a sister in law, Helen McGrane and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sisters Louise and Margaret "Eileen" McGrane and three brothers George, Robert, and J. Phillip McGrane.


His funeral will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
