Chester J. Szaro of Swampscott, MA, 90 years old, husband of Norma Cummings Szaro, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, after a long and happy life.
Born in Bayonne, New Jersey on October 12, 1922, Chester was the son of the late Mathew Szaro and Catherine Szpak Szaro, brother of the late Dr. Stephen E. Szaro, Adolf Szaro and Jean Szaro Maceiko. Chester graduated from Don Bosco Prepatory School in Ramsey, N.J., in 1941, subsequently earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Seton Hall College in South Orange, N.J. in 1948 after faithfully serving his country in the United States Army. During World War II, as the rank of Sergeant, Szaro met the Russians in Chemnitz, Germany, aiding the U.S. war effort by working as an interpreter for the Commander General of the Third Infantry Division. Szaro was awarded the Bronze Star for valiant service. He continued his work as an interpreter after the war for the American Ambassador to Poland in 1946 and 1947.
Chester worked in the china and gift business as a manufacturer's representative for over 50 years servicing major department stores including Jordan Marsh and Filene's. He worked with three of the most successful giftware companies in the industry including Ardalt, Inc., Arnart Imports, and the George Z. Lefton Company. Szaro was extremely active in the development and administration of the Gift Center in Bedford, MA, serving all key elected positions including President of the Association. He received the Salesman of the Year award in both 1998 and 2000. Chester retired from professional life at 79 years old.
Mr. Szaro leaves his beloved wife, Norma, two sons, Dr. Robert Szaro of Reston, VA, and Timothy Szaro of San Francisco, CA, a daughter, Noreen Szaro of Marblehead, MA as well as three grandchildren, Stephanie Szaro Heglund, Bradford Szaro Wayne, and Matthew Szaro. He also leaves his sister, Jane Mastrangelo of Bayonne, N.J. and nieces and nephews. Chester's memorial Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott, MA on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11:00AM. Interment will be private.
