Charles J. Hughes, age 90, devoted and loving husband of Nicholina F. (Ferraro) Hughes, entered into Heaven on Thursday, February 23, 2012.

Born in Lynn, the son of the late Bernard and Margaret (Murray) Hughes, he was raised and educated in Lynn. Following his graduation from Lynn English High School, he served in the Army Air Corps. He was initially stationed in Kentucky where he was trained as a high speed telegraph operator, prior to his deployment overseas.. A decorated veteran, Mr. Hughes had awarded the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 bronze service star.

Following his discharge, Mr. Hughes became an Air Traffic Controller in Boston for 35 years.

An avid small boat sailor in Salem and Wells, ME, once he retired, he enjoyed using his artistic skill and flair. He attended the New England School of Photography, and was constantly sharpening his skills especially with family photography. He was also well known for his calligraphy and wood carvings.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Karen Drislane and her husband John of Beverly; two grandchildren Jessica Drislane of Boston and Samantha Markowski and her husband Kevin of Wenham an two great grandchildren Arden and Gavin Markowski.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00PM. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
