Obituary

Carol Emma (Ring) Curtin of Salem, age 84, died after a short illness on June 5, 2022. She was the loving wife of Edward Curtin, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage before his death in January.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of Edward L. "Joe" Ring and Katherine "Kay" (Currier) Ring and sister to the late Clara "Claire" (Ring) Donahue. She was a graduate of Salem High School (Class of 1956) and attended Burdett Business College. After raising her family, she continued her education while working full-time and graduated magna cum laude in business from Salem State College in 1996.

Prior to raising her family, she worked as an executive secretary at United States Machine Corporation ("The Shoe") in Beverly. Later, she would work for over 20 years at the Cabot Market Letter in Salem, where she coordinated the design and was instrumental in converting the newsletter from print to the web. She also worked as a mediator and advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.

Carol was a talented artist who enjoyed oil painting. She enjoyed reading, listening to all kinds of music, attending the theater, and traveling, especially her annual trip with Ed to Florida. She was a gourmet chef and especially enjoyed preparing meals and planning parties for her family and friends.

She was dedicated to her family, and her top priority was always her "chickadees": her four children and their spouses - Robert (Sharon Cameron) of Peabody; Sharon (Robert Keane) of Bedford; William (Elizabeth Young) and Rachel (Alan McAlpine), all of Beverly, and her ten grandchildren, whom she adored and made each one feel special:  Hayley and Theodore Curtin; Miranda, Aisling and Rose Keane; Sean and Julia Curtin; and Clayton, Cecilia and Bradley McAlpine.

The highlight of her later years was the annual week spent with the entire family at Long Beach in Gloucester, which she organized completely, from the reservations made a year in advance, to the meals, to the 4:00 p.m. cocktail hour, to the after-dinner card games and bedtime stories.

Carol was also devoted to her many brothers- and sisters-in-law, her nieces and nephews, and their children. She was known by everyone as a kind and sensitive person, and was a living embodiment of acceptance.

Over the years, from her early school days to her recent times at the Polish Club of Danvers, she accumulated a wealth of friends whom she treasured, including lifelong friends William and Adele McKinnon of Danvers.

A joint celebration of the lives of Edward and Carol Curtin will be held on Monday, June 13, at 11:30 a.m. at the Hawthorne Hotel, 18 Washington Square W, Salem MA. All are invited to attend.
