Salem – Carl A. Poretta, age 84, loving husband of Constance (Carone) Poretta, died Tuesday evening, February 11, 2014 at the Brentwood Rehabilitation Center in Danvers. Born in Salem, Mr. Poretta was the son of the late Anthony and Angelina (Montalbano) Poretta. He attended Salem Public Schools and entered the United States Army during his Junior year of High School and served his country during WWII. He received his High School Diploma in a special ceremony at Salem High School fifteen years ago.
Upon his return from the US Army, he was employed with Creese and Cook in Danvers. He continued his career with the City of Salem School Department working as a custodian at the Cogswell School until his retirement.
Mr. Poretta was a very active man. He enjoyed coaching his sons in Baseball and Football and was very active in the Parks and Recreation Department in the City of Salem. He was a member of the Vittori- Rocci Post and the Franco American Club in Beverly and the Christopher Columbus Club in Salem.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are four children, Susan Newth and her husband Scott of Wenham, Marie Poretta of Salem, Anthony C. Poretta and his wife Elaine of Groveland, and Paul Poretta of High Point, NC; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by his son Stephen Poretta and his sister Marie Marchesini.
Mr. Poretta's funeral will be held on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St.) Salem. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours are Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Funeral Home from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Interment will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
