Bruce C. Smith age 53, loving husband for 30 years of Jacquelyn M. "Jackie" (Shea) Smith died in the Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY following a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Born, raised and educated in Salem the son of the late Lytle C.and Barbara (Dooley) Smith, he was graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1974. Bruce then received his Bachelors degree in Marine Engineering from Mass Maritime Academy in the Class of 1978. A member of the MEBA Union in New York, he began shipping as a Third Engineer through the union mostly with US Lines and ultimately becoming First Engineer. In 1985 Mr. Smith came "ashore" and was then employed for 18 years by New England Power Company, Salem (MA) Harbor Station as Chief Engineer. More recently he has been the Director of Facilities at the University of Rochester (NY).

When he wasn't working, Mr. Smith enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters Ashley Smith and her life partner Bernie Baca of Spencerport, NY and Allison Smith of Spencerport, NY; a brother Lytle C. "Lee" Smith III and his wife Donna of Peabody; a sister Pamela Goodick of Raymond, NH; a granddaughter Kayla Baca of Spencerport, NY and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Friday, January 8, 2010 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (cor of rte 114, exit 25A from rte 128) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. James Church, 161 Federal St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
