SALEM- It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Brendan John Whelton on September 16, 2023, in Salem, MA, at the age of 56, after a long battle with depression.

Bren was born in Salem on January 20, 1967, son of Carol A. (Leblanc) Whelton and the late Peter N. Whelton. He graduated in 1985 from Salem High School, and then attended UMass Amherst. His life's journey took him to San Francisco, where he lived for several years before he returned to his hometown.

Bren will be remembered for his warm and thoughtful nature. He was a man of deep compassion who volunteered his time to improve the lives of others. He was a voracious reader and an avid baker and had a wicked sense of humor.

In addition to his mother, Brendan is survived by a sister, Robin Whelton and her husband, Andrew Grilz, of Salem. He also leaves a niece, a nephew, several cousins, and numerous friends.

Visiting hours will take place on Monday September 25, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St. Salem.
