Barbara Ann Rochon, 82 years old, retired Veterans Services Secretary and loving wife of the late Wilfred (Fred) Rochon, passed away at home Saturday, May 23, 2020 surrounded by her devoted family. Born in Salem on July 14, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Lillian Tardiff. Barbara has lived in Salem all of her life. She married the love of her life "Fred" on September 6, 1959. She was a graduate of Marian Court College. Barbara worked for the City of Salem for 28 years. She retired from the City of Salem, secretary of the Veterans Services Department 1990 to 2003. She was employed by the City of Salem 1975 to 1990 at Shaughnessy Kaplan Hospital which originated at the Willows and moved to Dove Avenue. In her earlier years Barbara was employed at the old Sylvania plant and Foodland in Salem.
Among many awards Barbara received, she received awards of recognition from Congressman Tierney, State Office Commissioner of Veterans Affairs, State Rep Mike Ruane, Mayor Stanley Usovicz, Councilor Joan Lovely, VFW Dept of Mass, American Legion, and VA Medical Center Bedford for her commitment to veterans and volunteering personal time for veterans events and going above and beyond to leave no veteran without their deserved benefits.
She was a long time Auxiliary member of the Herman A. Spear Post #331 American Legion in Beverly and VFW of Salem.
Surviving her are her son Mark T. Rochon and her daughter-in-law Donna (Conway) Rochon who she considered as her "daughter" of Peabody, her grandchildren, Kristine Rochon, Kimberly Rochon and Scott Rochon, all of Peabody; her great-grandchildren, Kelsey Thurston and Nathan and Tyler Cream, all of Peabody; Her sister in law Isabelle (Bella) Doucette of Haverhill; her brother in law Vincent (Vinny) Power of Lynn and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her loving husband Fred on October 19, 2016; her siblings Irene Westphal, Henry Tardiff, and Johana Power; her father and mother in law Joseph and Josephine Rochon; her brother-in-law Louis Rochon; her sister-in-law Joan (Paskowski) Rochon; her brother-in-law Raymond Doucette; her nephew Michael Rochon and great nephew Richard Watson.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, services are private. Members of the community are welcome to drive by the Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St. Salem from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM for a drive-by memorial in the parking lot with Barbara's Photo and the family on Friday May 29, 2020.
