Barbara Catherine (Prosper) Kulevich, 91, of Marblehead, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her husband, children, and family after a brief illness. Her life was defined by faith, compassion, devotion to family, and an unwavering commitment to caring for others.

Barbara was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and graduated from Maynard High School in 1952, where she excelled both academically and athletically. She proudly served as captain of the varsity field hockey team, played on the varsity basketball team, and was elected vice president of her class. Even at a young age, Barbara’s warmth, leadership, and ability to make others feel valued naturally drew people to her.

After high school, Barbara pursued her calling in nursing at St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing, earning her nursing diploma and becoming a registered nurse. While raising eight children and balancing the demands of family life, she continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Salem State University and later a Master of Science in Nursing from Lesley University.

Barbara dedicated much of her professional life to Salem Hospital, where she served as head nurse in the special care nursery. She cared for the most fragile newborns and comforted anxious parents while helping countless infants grow strong enough to go home. Toward the end of her career at Salem Hospital, Barbara founded the Welcome Home Program, through which she visited new mothers and babies in their homes.

Retiring after 38 years of service at Salem Hospital, Barbara continued working for another 15 years at All Care Visiting Nurse Association as a Home Health Aide Manager, where, once again, her compassion and leadership touched countless lives.

Barbara met the love of her life, Alexander “Alex” Kulevich Jr., during chemistry class in her junior year of high school. Their love story became the foundation of a remarkable 67-year marriage after they wed on July 5, 1958. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, faith, unconditional love, and unwavering support. To witness Barbara and Alex together was to witness a true partnership, a love rooted in loyalty, sacrifice, and deep admiration for one another.

Although Barbara’s professional accomplishments were many, her greatest joy and proudest role was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her world. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her eight children, always making each one feel uniquely cherished, supported, and deeply loved.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were among her greatest blessings. Barbara and Alex rarely missed a game, recital, graduation, or milestone, traveling across the country and abroad to cheer on the people they loved most. Barbara was there proudly cheering from the sidelines with unmatched enthusiasm. Her grandchildren knew they could always count on “Grammy” for unconditional love, encouragement, wisdom, and a listening ear. She made every child and grandchild feel like the most important person in the room.

Barbara also treasured the joy of friendship and adventure throughout her life. One of the most meaningful experiences of her life was traveling to Vatican City, where she attended a special Mass celebrated by the Pope.

A deeply faithful woman, Barbara devoted much of her life to Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She served as a Eucharistic minister, volunteered in numerous parish ministries, and dedicated decades to teaching CCD to the children of Marblehead, continuing until her retirement in 2023. In recognition of their devotion to the Church and community, Barbara and Alex were honored with the prestigious Cheverus Award from the Archdiocese of Boston.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Beatrice Prosper; her sisters, Dorothy Otterson and Mary Crowley; and her brother-in-law, John P. Kulevich.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Alexander Kulevich Jr.; her children, MaryBeth (David) Perry, Tom (Patti) Kulevich, Jo-Mary (Doug) Koopman, Ann (Mike) Kane, Caren Downey, Alex (Lori) Kulevich, Peter (Laura) Kulevich, and Gerard Kulevich and his partner Michelle.
