Athanasios Hartzavalos age 70, beloved husband for 50 years of Angeliki (Droggitis) Hartzavalos of Salem formerly of Riverdale, NY died Friday evening in North Shore Medical Center, Salem..
Born and raised in Glina, Albania, the son of the late Harry and Olga (Kokollis) Hartzavalos, his family moved to Greece when he was 14 years old in 1952. Three years later they moved to the United States originally settling in Worcester. Mr. Hartzavalos later settled in New York where he became employed in the restaurant business as well as the bakery business. Mr. Hartzavalos later joined his father, an accomplished craftsman and businessman, in the real estate business and they also owned and operated a Pizza business together for many years.
He had been an active member of the Riverdale Senior Center where he played cards, enjoyed music, dancing, taking day trips, baking, cooking and painting. Most of all he enjoyed being with his family.
In August this year he and his wife moved to Salem.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hartzavalos is survived by three children Peter Hartzavalos of Salem, Olga Hartzavalos of Bradford, and Maria Hartzavalos of Bronx, New York; two grandchildren Georgette Angela Yannios and Angelina Maria Yannios both of Bradford; three beloved brothers in law John Droggitis and his family of West Peabody, Ernie Droggitis of Salem and Nick and Flora Solomos and family of Salem; a nephews George Hartzavalos of Riverdale, NY; a niece Joanna Hartzavalos of Riverdale NY; and a large extended family and many friends in the United States and Greece.
He was predeceased by a brother George Hartzavalos.
Hs funeral will be held on Friday November 9, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North) St, Salem to be followed by services at 11:00 A.M. in St. Vasilios Church, 7 Paleologos St,. Peabody, Ma. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. In addition to memorial contributions to the family, donations may be made to St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Altar Fund, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody, Ma 01960 or to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
