Arthur C. Callahan age 85, husband for 53 years of Alice A. (Hennessey) Callahan, died peacefully at home Friday morning.



Born in Salem the son of the late John and Annie (Gallagher) Callahan. He was raised and educated in Salem.

Mr. Callahan grew up caddying at Kernwood Country Club in Salem and was a member of the Salem High School Golf team, graduating in the Class of 1940. While golfing as a young man, he met his wife to be at a local golf course and his passion for golf stayed with him all of his life



A member of the Bear Hill Country Club, Mr. Callahan had earned the distinction of Golf Champion at both the Wenham Golf Club and the Bear Hill Country Club. He was the proud recipient of two "Hole in One" recognitions. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and was an avid reader. Arthur was one of the early coaches in the Danvers Youth Hockey organization. He enjoyed coaching the kids years ago and watching his grandchildren play the sport more recently.



He joined the United States Coast Guard following his graduation from Salem High, serving for four years. He was employed by H.P Hood Ice Cream for 20 years and later by the Fairview Machine Shop in Topsfield until retiring.



A wonderful husband, father and grandfather he was affectionately called Arthur by all of his family. In addition to his wife, Mr. Callahan is survived by two children, Arthur C. "Chuck" Callahan Jr. and his wife Ann of Danvers, and Margaret Yonis and her husband Dean of Topsfield with whom he had resided. Arthur leaves three grandchildren, James and Alecia Yonis and Samantha Callahan. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.



He was predeceased by his four brothers and two sisters, Fran, John, Margaret, Joseph, Thomas, and Dorothy Callahan.



His funeral will be held on Tuesday December 2 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Thomas the Apostle the Church on the Salem Peabody Line. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Monday December 1 from 2:00P.M to 4:00P.M and 6:00P.M to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Interment will be private.
