Obituary

Arlene R. O'Shea died at home in Salem on September 3.  Born in Lynn on June 4, 1926, she was the daughter of Arthur and Irene Hollis.  Arlene married James O'Shea in 1951 and they shared many happy years together until his death in 1996. Arlene is survived by her sister in law, S. Lee Hollis of Shelby, NC, and by her nephews David Hollis, his wife Sofia and their sons Diego & Mauricio of Pleasant Valley, NY; and Michael Hollis, his wife Carrie and daughter Athen of Steep Falls, ME.

Arlene graduated with a degree in Education from Salem State College where she met her husband.  She was a teacher in West Boylston and later became an executive secretary to the president of Hamblet and Hayes in Salem. Most recently, Arlene worked for the Travelers Insurance Company in Danvers until she retired at 84.   Always active in her community, Arlene  co-chaired the annual  antiques show at Hamilton Hall for the Peabody Essex Museum, was active in the Hamilton Hall lecture series and in  Historic Salem's Christmas in Salem house tour.  She and Jim were avid golfers as members of the Salem Country Club and also golfed in Scotland, England and Ireland.  Arlene always had at least one standard poodle by her side.

Arlene was an important part of Salem's Federal Street neighborhood and will be missed by her many friends.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. James Church, 160 Federal Street in Salem on Saturday, September 15 at 11 am.
