Obituary

Anne Marie Byrne Walker, age 93, died Friday morning October 11, 2013 at her home in Salem. Born May 5, 1920 to James J. and Mary A. Byrne, Anne was a graduate of St. James High School. She received her R.N. degree from Salem Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. After hearing the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor, she enlisted in the U. S. Navy, where she served as a nurse until 1943. Anne was stationed in Newfoundland, where she met her husband, Commander William Hamilton Walker M.D. The couple made their home in Red Banks, Mississippi, and had eight children. Following the death of her husband, Anne returned to Salem and to nursing. She was employed at the Salem Chronic Disease Hospital as a Supervisor and Assistant to the Hospital Director. Anne later served as Supervisor of Nursing and Director of Remotivation/Mobilization Program at Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital. In that capacity, she pioneered innovative programs to enhance the quality of life of chronically ill individuals.

She followed her interests through courses and workshops in alternative healing methods and handwriting analysis. She cherished whimsy, making clothes and dolls with intricate embroidery, and writing and illustrating children's stories.
Anne was pre-deceased by her husband, and her son, John D.C. Walker. She is survived by daughters Patricia Walker of West Newbury, Massachusetts; Elizabeth Walker of Delhi, New York; Anne Marie Walker of Fort Myers, Florida; and sons William Hamilton Walker of Bainbridge, Georgia; James Perry Walker of Memphis, Tennessee; Oliver Phillip Walker of East Meredith, New York; David Byrne Walker of Memphis, Tennessee. She also leaves sisters, Katherine McDonald of Bradenton, Florida, and Mary Byrne of Salem, Massachusetts, as well as six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 10:00 AM in St James Church, 156 Federal St, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, Salem, MA 01970. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to North Shore Medical Center, c/o the Development Office, 81 Highland Ave, Salem, MA 01970.
