Anne C. (Brophy) Bailey, age 87, wife of the late Norman Bailey of
Marblehead, died Thursday, February 19 at Brooksby Village, Peabody
following a brief illness.
Born in Marblehead's "Shipyard" neighborhood, she was the daughter of the late James P. and Ellen (McCloskey) Brophy. While a sophomore at Marblehead High School she met her high school sweetheart, Norman Bailey, who was then a senior. They continued dating and, following
her graduation from Marblehead High School in the class of 1939, she became an executive secretary at the General Electric River Works plant in Lynn. Anne and Norm were married in 1943 while Norm was home
on leave from the navy.
A stay-at-home mom for many years, Mrs. Bailey went to work at the
Town Store in Marblehead and later was employed by the Patti Anne
Clothing in Salem until its closing. She then worked part time at the
Dandelion in Marblehead, retiring in her mid-seventies.
Mrs. Bailey loved her home in the Shipyard neighborhood where she
lived all her life until 2003. She was well known for her beautiful
gardens and was a life-long parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea
Church.
A loving mother, she is survived by two daughters, Claire M. Turner
and her husband, John, of Salem, and Christine E. Bailey of
Marblehead; four grandchildren, Emily Baillie and Sara Shinn of
Beverly, Will and Jessica Beringer of Marblehead; one great-
grandchild, Ethan Shinn of Beverly; a sister, Marie Adams of
Marblehead; a sister-in-law, Marion Bailey of Marblehead, and many
nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her precious daughter,
Mimsie Shinn, and her beloved brother, J. Paul Brophy.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 24th at 9:15 AM from the
Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street (corner of North Street), Salem
to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at Our Lady Star of the
Sea Church, 81 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully
invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Monday from 4:00 PM to 8:00
PM. Interment will be in the Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead. Those
