Anna Marie (Hughes) Burgess, 77, of Gloucester died Thursday, December 25th, 2008 at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester, MA.

Born in Salem, MA January 24, 1931, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Bessie A. (Brennan) Hughes. Anna was a graduate of Salem High School Class of "49". She raised her family in Beverly and later after retirement moved to Middleton. She worked for the Hogan Regional Center in Danvers until retirement. During her retirement years she took great pride in working for North Shore Elder Services assisting elderly folks with their shopping needs. She enjoyed reading, watching TV and doing word puzzles. She read the Salem News daily. She was a big fan of the Salem Willows and used to visit often for ice cream, popcorn or some taffy.

Surviving her are four sons, John, his wife Ellen, Michael, Wayne, his wife Mary, Keith, his wife Debra; four grandchildren Katie, Austin, Elizabeth, Jennifer; sister Dorothy (Dottie) L'Abbe, brothers Jack Hughes, Robert Hughes, sister-in-law Jeanette Hughes, brother-in-law Leonard L'Italien and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary L'Italien, Elizabeth (Betty) Claveau, Eleanor Conway, William Hughes, brother-in-laws Rene L'Abbe, Brendan Conway, Raymond Claveau, and sister-in-law Judy Hughes, along with longtime companion Angelo Gervasi.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, December 29, at 10:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal ST (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. in St. James Church, 161 Federal St, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 6 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Anna's memory to Friends of Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 292 Washington St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
