Ann (Cawley) Dever of Marblehead, Massachusetts, age 85, passed away on June 20, 2021. She was the wife of the late Judge Joseph I. Dever, to whom she was married to for 53 years. Ann was born in New York City and grew up in Manhattan. She resided in Marblehead for the last fifty-five years. She was the daughter of the late James A. Cawley and Mary Louise (Maloney) Cawley. She was a graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York and received a master's degree from Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass.
Ann was for many years a schoolteacher and taught in Beverly at the Abraham Edwards School, in Salem at the Saltonstall School and in Lynn at St. Jean the Baptiste School. In 1980, she became a Probation Officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and served in that capacity at the Lynn District Court until she retired in 2015. During her life, Ann was devoted to her family and friends. She also served in many civic organizations and community groups, including as a volunteer at My Brother's Table in Lynn, in parent teacher organizations in the Marblehead Public Schools and in the Guild of St. Williams at St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers. She was a member of the Marblehead Democratic Town Committee. Ann enjoyed the North Shore Music Theater and the lecture series at Hamilton Hall in Salem. She was a daily communicant at Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish in Marblehead where she served for many years as a religious education teacher and in other leadership roles.
In addition to her late husband, she was predeceased by her brother, David J. Cawley, of Ft. Meyers, FL (formerly of Annisquam, Mass.). She leaves her daughter Lesley Dever of Marblehead, her son Joseph P. Dever and his wife Theresa Finn Dever of Marblehead, her son Paul A. Dever and his wife Samantha Helfert of Silver Spring, MD and her son Robert Dever and his wife Bianca Dever of Beverly. She also leaves eight grandchildren, Margaret Mary, Joseph Ignatius, Eleanor Rose, Patrick Finn and John Joseph all of Marblehead, Norah Elizabeth of Silver Spring, MD and Derek James and Mary Louise of Beverly. She leaves many other dear relatives and friends.
Services will be from Murphy Funeral Home, Salem on Saturday, June 26 th at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church at 12 noon, located at 85 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead. Visiting hours will be on Friday, June 25 th from 4-8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St. in Salem. Burial will be private.
