Andrew E. "Drew" Thomen, Jr. age 49, of Salem, a former, longtime resident of South Dennis, MA, died peacefully at the home of his sister, Marianne Williams on Monday December 22, 2008.


Born in Torrington, CT the only son of the late Andy and Betty (Ahearn) Thomen, Drew grew up in West Goshen, CT and graduated from Wamogo Regional High School, Litchfield, CT in the Class of 1977. Mr. Thomen was a member of the high school band as well as the baseball, basketball and soccer teams.


When he moved to Cape Cod in 1979, he became an umpire for various Cape and the Islands softball teams. An avid car buff, he had been employed in auto parts and repair, and as a distributor for AMSOIL. In recent years, he assisted his parents until their deaths in 2000 and 2007.


Drew was an avid fisherman, surfcasting for stripped bass on Cape Cod. A sports enthusiast, he was a devoted Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, soccer and volleyball fan. He also enjoyed his chatroom buddies, especially Barb and Jackie, and many friends on the Cape, including canines Koby and Axel, as he missed his yellow lab, Maddie. He also lovedtaking walks along West Dennis Beach, listening to hard rock music ("Tool") and enjoyed following the SETI Program on the web.

He is survived by his sister, Cheryl and her husband William Newman of Vienna, VA, Marianne and her husband, Richard Williams of Salem, MA and Linda and her husband, Timothy Wells of South Dennis, MA. He was a wonderful uncle and enjoyed his nieces and nephews: Daniel Drever of CT, Jonathan and Kim Drever with their children, Natalie, Lauren and Nichole and her son Jayden of VA, Mark and Dana Drever with their son, Jacob of VA, Jamie and Amy Mordarski with their daughter, Megan of CT, Kevin and Karin with their daughter, Ella of N. Attleboro, Joshua Wells of VA, Colin Williams and Lisa Shell of Boston, and Kathleen Williams of Salem.


His funeral will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St.(cor of North ST), Salem, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be Saturday afternoon from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Interment will be private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or your local animal shelter.
