Amelia Bettencourt, age 85, wife of the late Manuel Avila Ramos of Salem died in the Essex Park and Rehabilitation Center, Beverly, following a long illness.
Born and raised in the Azores, the daughter of the late Carlos Correia Bettencourt and the late Mariana Mendonca Bettencourt, she was one of 10 children including two brothers and seven sisters. Mrs. Bettencourt came to the United States in 1975 and initially lived in Peabody where she worked in local leather shops. Later, Mrs. Bettencourt worked at Ideal Baby Shoe in Danvers and then moved to Salem to live with her son, Antonio and his wife Maria.
Mrs. Bettencourt loved taking care of her family, cooking, gardening, and taking care of her home.
She is survived by her two children Antonio B.R. Ramos and his wife Maria of Salem and Manuel Ramos and his wife Alcina of Peabody, two grandchildren Steven Ramos of Salem and Anna Ramos of Peabody, five granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2011 at 8:00 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Walsh Ave., Peabody, MA 01960. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4:00PM to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in St., Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
