Alma Martin Howie of Marblehead, beloved wife of the late Robert Lawrence Howie of Marblehead for more than 62 years, died at home on November 14 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Percy Lawrence Martin and Florence Riley Martin. Mrs. Howie was predeceased by two sisters, Janice Martin Brandt and Marilyn Martin Bergevin and is survived by one, Kathryn Martin Hunt.

Born in Marblehead into a family that has lived in town for three centuries, Mrs. Howie was graduated from Marblehead High School in 1940. She continued her education at the Salem Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1943. She was a supervisory nurse, as well as a private duty nurse at Salem Hospital for many years. She retired from active duty nursing in the 1960s.

Known far and wide for her dinner parties, gracious hospitality, and sense of style, Mrs. Howie was an active member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Marblehead, where she served as Senior Warden, directress of the Altar Guild, and in many other positions for more than 50 years. In past years she traveled extensively with her husband, celebrating a milestone birthday in London and Paris with her children and close friends.

Known affectionately as "Gramere," she was devoted to her family. She leaves a daughter, Carol Howie Eldridge and a son, Robert Lawrence Howie, Jr., and their spouses Kenneth MacLean Eldridge and Marian Wu Howie; seven grandchildren (Susan E. Forker, Amy E. Robertson, Sarah E. Francis, Elizabeth W.H. Dank, Alexandra L.H. Stark, John R.R. Howie, Madison A. Howie), and nine great-grandchildren.


Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 25 from 4:00-6:00pm at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Marblehead. A funeral Mass will follow at the church on November 26 at 10:30am. Interment, which will be private, will be in the historic old churchyard adjacent to the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Howie's name to the Alma Martin Howie Churchyard Fund, c/o St. Michael's Church, 26 Pleasant St., Marblehead, MA 01945.
