Alice (Markarian) Vartigan, 86 years, wife of the late James R. Vartigan, died late Friday evening July 27, 2012 at Sunrise Of Burlington following a long illness. Born in Peabody, Alice was the daughter of the late David and Eva (Arakelian) Markarian. She was raised and educated in Peabody. At age 13, Alice lost her mother followed by the passing of her father six months later. She along with her twin brothers were adopted by their Uncle, George Arakelian who was lovingly known as "Caddy".
Mrs. Vartigan graduated from Peabody High School. Following high school, she completed a Secretarial Program at Salem Commercial School. Upon graduation from the program, she worked as a secretary for several years. On June 18, 1950 she wed her husband James and had one child, Pamela Jean Vartigan. Following the birth of her daughter, Mrs. Vartigan studied to become an Electrologist and started her business from her home. She worked as a Registered Electrologist for many years, retiring in the late 1990's. Alice was an avid reader, enjoyed music, dancing and was a great cook. She loved animals, with a special place in her heart for dogs.
Surviving her is her daughter, Pamela "Pam" Jean Vartigan–Tremblay and her husband Gerard "Gerry" Tremblay and his children Lisa, Carol, Marc and Stacy. She is survived by her brother Aleyes "Al" Markarian and his wife Geraldine of Salem, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Vartigan was also the sister of the late Solomon Markarian.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday August 2, 2012 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (Cor of North St.) Salem at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours are Wednesday, August 1, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Internment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem, MA. Following the Internment, a gathering will be held at the Hawthorne Hotel, 18 Washington Sq. West, Salem, MA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Alice Vartigan's memory to the Toy Poodle Rescue, P.O. Box 274, Dover, MA 02030 or on line to www.toypoodlerescue.net.
