Salem…..

Alice R. (Manning) Jewett, age 85, wife of the late Frederic C. Jewett, Sr. died Monday evening, July 13, at Brooksby Village, Peabody.

A longtime resident of Dunlap St., Salem until moving to Peabody in 2001, she was born in Salem the daughter of the late James and Mary A (Dunne) Manning. Educated in Salem schools, Mrs. Jewett was the Valedictorian of the Salem Classical and High School, Class of 1940. She then received her BS in education from Salem State College in the Class of 1944 and began a 30 year teaching career in the Salem Public Schools at both the Pickering School and the Bates School. She was a member of the Retired Essex County Employees and the Commonwealth of MA Retired Employees.

She was a communicant of St. James Church for many years and had been a member of the Catholic Relief Services, St. Jude and the African Missions. Mrs. Jewett was also proud of her family heritage and was a member of the Jewett Society of America. More recently Mrs. Jewett had been a member of the Red Hat Society at Brooksby Village.

She is survived by three children, Frederic C. Jewett, DPM and his wife Donna of Boxford, William M Jewett and his wife Patricia of Rumson, NJ and Alicia T. Fentiman and her husband Richard of Cambridge, England; five grandchildren Frederic "Eric", Meghan and Christian Jewett of Boxford and Matthew and Christopher Jewett of Rumson, NJ; a sister in law Priscilla J. Thorndike of Hendersonville, NC; many nieces and nephews including Mary A Manning of Salem, John P Manning of Storrs, CT, Phillip Sullivan of South Orleans, MA, William Sullivan of Little Rock, AK, Robert Sullivan of Las Vegas NV, Briana Gray of Danvers, Judith Ritchie and Elaine Hogan of Salem and Carol Savas of Waterville Valley, NH and many great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, John J. William P and James T. Manning and two sisters Eleanor Sullivan and Marie McCarthy.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, July 17, at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St.,(cor of North St) to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Salem. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday 4:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
