Salem…..

Alexandra A. "Alice" (Vardalakos) Tranos, age 92, wife of the late John
Tranos, formerly of Summit Ave., Salem, died in the Lafayette Nursing Home, Marblehead, Thursday evening of natural causes.

A lifelong resident of Salem, Alex was the daughter of the late Peter and Lillian (Cravates) Vardalakos. Mrs. Tranos was the Class Secretary of her graduating class of '34 from Salem High School. For 19 years Mrs. Tranos was a long-distance operator ushering in the "Age of Dial ". She was employed by New England Telephone & Telegraph Co in Salem until her retirement.


An active member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody, she was President of Philoptohos Womens' charity, where she organized several dinner dance/fundraisers at Salem's famed Hawthorne Hotel. She was also a member of the Daughters of Penelope for many years.


The relationship between she and John was a true love story and they celebrated 56 years of marriage. Her family lovingly remembers her as a devoted wife and special caregiver for her husband when he was stricken with cardiac issues
at the age of 56.


Mrs. Tranos is survived by her daughter and long-time caregiver Sally Alexandra Tranos, formerly of North Palm Beach, FL, now of Marblehead and a loving sister-in-law, Tina Lefthes of Salem; by two grandchildren, Meghan Tranos Rossetti of Northboro, MA and Marc Lewis Tranos of Peabody, MA and many nieces, nephews, and grand-nephews.

She is predeceased by her son, Lewis, "Lonny" of Stamford, CT and a brother, James "Jimmy" Vardalakos and two sisters, Lee Contos and Amelia Lefthes, all of Salem.


Her funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by funeral Services at 10:00 A.M. in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody, Ma. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday between the hours of 2:00P.M. and 6:00P.M. at the Murphy Funeral Home. Internment immediately following at Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem
