Robert Waldron Roland, age 79 years, husband of Pamela (O’Neil) Roland, died peacefully Saturday morning, August 17, 2013 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Bob was born in Newton, son of the late Clyde W. and Helen Barbara (Bryant) Barrows. He was raised in Nahant and graduated from Lynn English High School in the class of 1952.
Following High School, he entered the United States Army and served in Special Services in Europe. Following his discharge, Bob earned his Bachelors of Arts from U Mass Amherst in Physical Education and continued his education at Boston University earning his Master’s Degree in English and Physical Education.
Bob was a Physical Education teacher at Marblehead High School for over 30 years. He was a Hockey Coach for the School from 1962 to the mid 1990’s and led them to the State Finals at the Boston Garden in 1964, 1980 and 1985. He also was a hockey coach for Lynn English High School in the 1990’s. More recently he was a driver for the North Shore Shuttle.
Bob was a former member of the North Shore Baseball Umpires Association, former president of the Massachusetts Hockey Association, and a former Boston Globe Hockey Coach of the Year. He was also inducted to the Massachusetts Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame and inducted into the Friends of Marblehead Hockey Hall of Fame.
Bob lived life to the fullest, and touched many lives through his teaching and coaching career. He was an avid Red Sox fan. Most importantly, he loved all his children dearly.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are eight children, Amanda Roland, Richard Roland, Kelly Roland and Vanessa White all of Marblehead, Janice Lamir of Nahant, Kerri Wear and her husband Tim of Somerville, Lindsey Roland of New Castle, ME, Roberta Moore of NH, two brothers, Richard Roland and his wife Cathy of Hobe Sound, FL; Allen L. Roland of Sonoma, CA, three sisters, Edith Roland of Nahant, Susan Cusic of Rochester, MA and Martha Peach of Marblehead, and a large extended family. He was also predeceased by his beloved son Mark Steven Roland.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Nahant Village Church, 27 Cliff Street, Nahant on Thursday, August 22 at 11:00 A.M. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Interment will be held privately.
